Amgala Temple is the sound of three musical forces combined. The result is an overwhelming instrumental clash of spontaneity and control, improvisation and clairvoyance - all meshed together in a quest to make something radiant.

 

The mix of Lars Horntveth, Amund Maarud and Gard Nilssen is a wish come true for music fans, as they each have made great impact as bandleaders, solo artists and musicians in an array of projects - be it with Jaga Jazzist, Susanne Sundfor, The Grand, Todd Terje, Morudes, Bushman's Revenge, A-ha, Acoustic Unity or The National Bank.

 But Amgala Temple sounds a little like the above. These musicians' profound interest in old and new sounds, and their deep respect for each other, was essential in creating this space where they could create more freely - venturing into new, epic and sonic landscapes - letting whatever happens happen. Lars Horntveth's multi-instrumentalism - playing bass, synthesizers and more, Amund Maarud's wild guitar abilities and Gard Nilssen's impeccable freeform drumming makes for a breathtaking musical experience. Their debut album is a document of their natural sound; the recordings remain untampered, resulting in a very honest display of their core sound. Amgala Temple stands for bold sounding, experimental and imaginative music; a mix of groovy alternative rock, jazzy prog rock and krautrock.

To be honest, ‘’Invisible Airships’’ confuses me. The album is completely instrumental, and that makes it a bit harder to judge for me. I am not used to the lack of vocals, because I try to look into the lyrical content as well. I do really like their sound that comes straight out of the 1970’s, so I do get that vibe. But as mostly a metal listener, this experimental piece of art is not exactly my cup of tea.
