Interview with Roy Khan

Conception

When news broke of a Conception reunion with iconic metal singer Roy Khan, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to do an interview and talk about the new music the four talented Norwegians are creating. Roy Khan kindly obliged us with the answers!

''Hello, Roy and thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview with Lyrical Spell Magazine! How are you? I guess you know that your presence on the metal scene has been dearly missed, and I think I speak on behalf of the whole fan-base when I say "welcome back! It's so great to have you back doing music"! Are you happy doing this type of music again?''

Roy: ''I’m fine thank you, and thank you for your interest! Yes - it’s great to be back working with Conception!''

''How was your time away from the public eye? Are your batteries fully charged? How is your family is doing, and how do they feel about your return to the music industry?''

Roy: ''It was a well needed break, and I really shut off everything and everyone except my family for a long time, which is the best thing I’ve done. My family is going fine, and this return is different in the sense that we’re doing it all ourselves this time. It’s more work, but it also means more control of the whole process, which we all feel is great.''

''I am extremely glad to see Conception back together again. When did this idea appear and what motivated you to go forth with it?''

Roy: ''It began with Tore writing music and jamming with Arve, they felt they were on to Conception material and approached me with it. We tried it out with Ingar, and it became natural to continue as Conception again.''

''Short term I know you plan an EP release through a Pledge campaign, but do you have any long-term plans? What are your main goals with Conception?''

Roy: ''At the moment we focus on the EP, and since we’re doing it ourselves it’s a lot of work. So, one step at a time!''

''What perks can the fans buy to support the campaign?''

Roy: ''Anything from records, tickets to a pre listening party in Oslo, to regular merch and a camping trip - but that one actually already sold out.''

''Are you happy with the response Conception has received in such a short period?''

Roy: ''We are amazed and touched by the overwhelming response, and we can’t wait to share our music with our fans!''

''If you don't mind me asking, what caused the dissolution of the partnership with Thomas Youngblood and Kamelot?''

Roy: ''It was really about me needing a complete break, I felt terrible and needed to be with my family. It was not an easy decision to leave at such a peak of my career, but I had to listen to my body and take care of my health. It has never been any bad blood between us, and I am happy to see they are doing well.''

I want to thank Roy Khan and the Conception Press Team for making this interview possible. Needless to say I am eagerly looking forward to the release of the EP!

As a conclusion, I want to share one of my favorite Conception song, off of my favorite album “Flow” (1997) as I believe it’s a good way to (re)introduce the band to the ones who may not know them, or may have drifted away from their music. Also, it’s a good way to spend the time until the EP is released.
