Hidden Lapse - Butterflies

HIDDEN LAPSE

BUTTERFLIES

Rockshots Records

Release: May 31, 2019

‘’Hidden Lapse is a melodic metal project, touched by progressive and the most modern metal too. We tell stories, too. We get inspiration from many different sources going from power-progressive to the alternative rock/metal scene.

We're born in 2011 as a duo project from the twisted minds of Marco and Romina, then expanded (after something like 4 years of tinkering, quitting and restarting) into a full band with Alessia and Luca in 2015.’’ - taken from the band’s Facebook biography.

“We are all ‘Butterflies’, our lives spring into each other, too fast. This album puts us behind the eyes of eight unique anti-heroes and victims of our time, who don’t belong here though. ‘Butterflies’ is all about being trapped in recursive routines and still remaining on the outside.”

The new album “Butterflies” is an aggressive and melancholic power prog album, with ethereal vocals, abrasive riffing and pounding drums.

‘’Dead Jester’’ opens with a very impressive guitar riff, but that is to be expected on a progressive metal album. I’d say it is a pretty solid opening track. ‘’Third’’ opens with a lovely piano intro, I would have loved it if it was a bit more present in the song instead of on the background, the guitars mute it down a bit unfortunately. The guitar is mixed WAY too loud anyway. ‘’The Letter O’’ has too much elements at once, it sounds very messy. ‘“Stone Mask’’ is already much better in the first minute. However it does not sound original, yet it is good. I am very torn on this song.

‘’Glitchers’’ has a few electronic elements throughout the track, and I’d say: if you choose to do this kind of trick, go for it 100%. And it seems a bit half-assed on that part. Like the track is halfway done. ‘’Grim Poet’’ did not really impress me. I’m happy that Alessia’s vocals are good, otherwise I probably would have stopped listened by now. ‘’Sleeping Beauty Syndrome’’ is the first song I would really call melancholic (as that is how Hidden Lapse advertise themselves), but that is only to be heard in the intro. I do like Marco’s vocals, BUT they are mixed horribly. They should have been more up front. ‘’Cruel Enigma’’ is without a doubt the best track on ‘’Butterflies’’. Outro track ‘’DUST’’ is completely instrumental.

‘’Butterflies’’ is a nice album but there is definitely a lot of room for improvement, especially in the mixing. The guitar was too loud, the vocals too soft and in Marco’s case: barely hearable. For a sophomore release, I expected better.
